The common kingfisher’s head and back are scattered with light blue spots. Its chest and belly are orange, and its feet are red. The female’s lower mandible is red.
Habits: The common kingfisher appears in flat to low-altitude rivers, streams, ponds, and ditches. It often stands on twigs or rocks that protrude from the waterside. When the bird finds prey, it immediately dives into the water to catch its prey, often making “chee” calls when flying. The birds mostly feed on small fish, as well as aquatic insects. They are also known as “Yu-gou” or “tiò-hî-ang” in Taiwan.
